Work At Home Medical Transcription

By Night Writer

Everybody has thought of working at home in some point in their life, i know I have and still do. With all the scams just crowding the search engines, it's no wonder people often think it isn't possible. Alot of obstacles, changes, dreams, and hopes led me on a search for real work at home jobs. I did manage to sift through the web and find some good information. I hope some of you will find this useful. If you do, i would love to hear some success stories.

DO YOU HAVE WHAT IT TAKES

Each medical transcription company you apply too ( I will list as many as i can a little further down) will have different requirements for what you need to work with them. Here are some things for you to consider.

  • Highspeed (dsl, cable) there are few companies that will hire you with only dialup, but keep in mind this will slow down your progress when downloading big audio files
  • Internet Explorer (seems to be most compatible for all the companies i found)
  • Footpedal (not required by all companies, but perhaps a good investment. more control, more speed=more money)
  • USB Headset ( required by some, not all)
  • Software (programs are used that enable you to slow down and/or repeat segments of audio. A definite must have. People come with many tones and accents, it's not as easy as you might think. The company you apply to will tell which program they use, but i find alot just require you to have express scribe, and best of all..it's free! I have used it myself for practice, and it works rather well.)

Medical Transcription Companies Known To Hire Home Workers

So here is a list i have come up with. However just because it is listed here, does not in any way guarantee that they are hiring at the moment. Always respect the requests and requirements of each company you apply too. Alot of these companies you will find, require at least 2 years experience in medical transcription, however there are a few companies who will hire someone with little to no experience. I will add more as i find them, so be sure to check back!

I would not recommend for anyone these days to go into the medical transcription field. I had done it for over year years until recently. It is a dying industry that paid more in the 1980s than it does today. It used to be a wonderful field to be in, but a lot of work is outsourced overseas, which has brought the salary to a standstill or drop in recent years. With most companies, there are no benefits and no days off (unless you take them without pay). Also, it is slowly changing over to editing rather than straight out typing, which pays half the amount per line. There are some aspects of transcription that I still love, but it is no longer the wonderful profession that it was in the past.

This is an era when computers and the Internet can give you all the comforts of life. The web has morphed from being a lifeless entity to a wholly, almost-living consortium. Who can say otherwise? Be it businesses, education, politics, or even medicine, the Internet is all one needs for promoting business, conducting meetings, making and breaking deals, and treating patients. http://www.spectramedi.com

Another great training option is Career Step. They are AHDI approved and they really prepare you for the work of an MT. They have hours and hours of real doctor dictation to work with so you get lots of practice. They also make learning fun by mixing it up with things like crossword puzzles as quizzes. I especially like that they have a course demo so you can see what it is like before you enroll. http://www.careerstep.com/demo/?uid=ref10077 I am so lucky to be able to work from home!

Software that make transcription easier should be a priority, next to a high-speed Internet connection. Inq.net, for instance, allows you to play back audio files without having to close the window for MS Word or Excel.

Oh my gosh, this may be the site I've been looking for! I have medical terminology and work part time in a hospital, and am taking medical transcription through correspondence. A lot of the medical terms I am already familiar with, but it is not teaching me anything about the equipment, i.e. footpedal, headset, or software programs, and I am not sure if they are going to help me find work. Anyone know where newbies like me can get a job to start gaining experience? And does anyone have any info on any of this equipment, and where to buy it? Thanks for ANY info you can pass along!

Just went to a seminar on how to take at home course to learn to be a medical transcritionist.. My concern is how helpful is a company like At Home Professions at helping graduates find work ?

I recently finished a MT course through TechSkills in Charlotte NC - First, I do not recommend the school. They are of NO HELP whatsoever. I managed to get a job with DIT Transcription, but was told I would not get paid for 6 weeks. I was ok with that but those weeks passed and now they don't want to pay me - saying they are having financial problems. I've come to find out they have been on the News for similar circumstances and also been reported to BBB for not paying sub-contractors and other people they do business with. So "Beware" of who you go to work for. Check them out. I was working from home, spent $$ getting set-up and now I'm fighting for a paycheck and looking for another job. I'm my sole support so I have to find a job. I was on unemployment but that has run out. I'm over 58 and no one wants to hire me no matter how good my resume looks. It's all a big mess out there. I do agree with others - MT is a tough job - you MUST be a good speller, be on your toes and have a "common sense" brain mentality, as well. When in school, I felt as if I were studying to become a doctor. I did very well and, actually, considered going to college to get a medical degree - but in psychology. I love psychology, especially criminal psychology. Good luck to all and say a prayer for me that I find a job quickly so I don't have to leave my grandson. He's my only one and would be devastated if I had to move away after only being near him for 4-1/2 yrs. I moved here to be near him so you know how important it is to stay here. Again, I wish you all the best of luck and success.

Alison 23 months ago

Not sure if anyone has already commented this, but even if you have just taken a "medical terminology" course this does not mean you will make it in transcription. I have been working as an MT for seven years. I took a Medical Transcription Course through my local college. Don't be fooled into thinking that transcription is just typing. It is a difficult job and can seem impossible if you don't have the right training. If you think this is of interest to you as a career then invest time in doing a full transcription course and not just medical terminology!

I currently work for Focus Infomatics as an MT and really enjoy it. I only do it parttime so I have some really good hours. I did my training through Career Step and got really good training. I am happy with the results. It is a very challenging career, you will have good days and bad days. It takes a person who can sit for long hours, very good with grammatical and spelling techniques, follow instructions, and have a good ear. Oh and lots of patience doesn't hurt! :) Good luck!

I am getting ready to take medical terminology class and then I will be moving on to my Medical Transcriptionist training. I wish to share with everyone that for people who want to take it online, it is very challenging. I suggest if you have a local Community College to check it out and go that route. My class is &175 and it is 14 weeks.

Great list, a lot of research! Just to mention, Navesys was hiring "newbies", but must be able to access their system including zip files.

Watch out for InScribe - they grade your tests as "many misspelled words" in order to get you to enroll in their transcription course.

If anyone wants to verify which courses are accredited/accepted, check AAMT (now AHDI) for the listing of approved schools, both online and at a facility.

SUM program is excellent, but not a school and may not be as accepted. They have a great training program.

Beware of MedTrans and TransAm, they say they will hire you after you complete their course, but they do not.

I have been searching since October 2008 for a work at home transcription job. The job market is very intense with so many people out of work. I have seen graduates from M-Tec also having a difficult time (this course and Career Step are both approved through AAMT), usually they are hired within a week. It is a bad economy, but DO NOT GIVE UP!

Good luck!

I am a medical transcriptionist who works from home. I have been in this field for 10 years. For those of you who think you can do this because you 'can type' - you might want to think again. I do not get paid for my typing skills. I get paid for my medical knowledge. If you are serious about a position such as this, I suggest taking a transcription course at a local community college. Another thing to remember is that all of these companies have strict turn around times. So even though you are working from home, it should still be considered a job and takes a large amount of discipline to sit in front of your computer for numerous hours a day to complete your assignment.

Good luck to all!

bluebird..thanks for sharing your experience with us. I am sorry it didn't work out for you. Comments like that are really good to hear though.  Knowing exactly what you are getting into or should be prepared for, will help alot of people in making a good decision rather than a hasty one. Medical transcription is not going to be for everyone. But if you think you can excel at that type of learning, i still believe it is an excellent work opportunity.

I studied with Career Step online for eight months. It was very intimidating due to the comprehensiveness of the course and I can tell whoever might be interested that they do not have financial aid. The course is $1800-$2000. It was well-organized but my problem was I could not keep up with the memorization of all the tons and tons of words and abbreviations you are required to memorize. I'd get one long set memorized, then go on to something else and would have to continually go back and re-memorize the groups of word lists from before. It was a constant struggle. It demands a person who is a good speller in general and one that can type fairly well. I just got burned out on it. Another thing for me was the fact that you pretty much have to be smarter than the doctors as far as terminology goes because they rattle everything off quckly and you have to decipher it all and turn it into a professional legal document with correct spelling, correct punctuation and correct grammar. I wish the best of luck to those who go this route because they will certainly need it. You will be learning a whole new language with some words up to 20 characters long. You also have to memorize drugs, diseases, medical procedure, body parts and functions, etc. in addition to the correct spelling of all of them. So think long and hard before you dish out the dough. I lost money on this one, but I gained back my peace of mind thankfully!

lol, good question. from what i have read most lines are based on 65 characters per line, and this often includes spaces.

I am not sure it can be figured out that way, because a certain amount of your time will be spent listening to what is said. and slowing down or repeating the audio etc,

Kat07 profile image

Kat07 4 years ago

Hmmm....mental math.....if you type at least 30 words per minute, how many lines per hour does that come out to? : )

Night Writer profile image

Night Writer Hub Author 4 years ago

that didn't work too well when i cut and pasted it, i will give you the link where i found the info. keep in mind this example is only for 8 cents per line. Many companies will not have the same rate.

Night Writer Hub Author 4 years ago

Sure i can. If you are talking about training online, it seems that most can be done within a year, and maybe even less for those programs that allow you to learn at your own pace.

here is something i found on the canscribe training site. all companies differ in their pay rates, some will hire you as an employee and some as an independant contractor as well.

This chart will give you the low end of what you can expect to make as a Medical Transcriptionist. This is figured at a STARTING RATE of 8 cents per line. The dollar figure is the GROSS ANNUAL INCOME.

Days Worked per Week Number of Lines Typed Per DayGross Annual Income 500 1000 1500 2000

2

$4,160 $8,320 $12,480 $16,640

3

$6,240 $12,480 $18,720 $24,960

4

$8,320 $16,640 $24,960 $33,280

5

$10,400 $20,800 $31,200 $41,600 hope that helps.

Debra...that is a great accomplishment! I took medical terminology in college too, but i cant say that i would ever have been able to perform that well on such a test.

Did you ever look into the career step program? It is used by alot of colleges even, I think they had a section on financial aid options.

That has been one of my obstacles. I was really impressed with the canscribe school in canada but i really can not afford it right now. On the site it talks about one company that will automatically accept you for work if you complete the course. They use the career step program as well for teaching.

As for other obstacles i have many, i live in a very rural area where "on-site" jobs are just as hard to find as a work at home jobs. There is no dsl or cable, and the company i have worked for 8 years is closing down this summer. I often wonder how many people like me are out there like me, educated, hardworking people, who have a lot to offer but just can't catch a break. I am sort of new to applying to work at home jobs online, so i am not ready to quit just yet. I have fun researching this stuff too, so i thought it might be good idea to share things i find.
